Pre-employment Carpenter, 16-week certificate

If you enjoy creating things with your hands and want to hone your woodcraft abilities, then try carpentry. Carpenters build and repair buildings and other structures. You must work accurately and economically plus follow national and local building codes. As a carpenter you can be a generalist in residential, commercial or maintenance. Some carpenters specialize in one type of work such as framing, bench work or finishing work.
Residential work can include:

  • cribbing the basement
  • building the framework, walls and roof
  • exterior and interior finishing
  • installing doors, windows, cabinets, stairs, handrails, paneling, moulding and ceiling tiles

Commerical or industrial jobs include building:

  • concrete forms
  • scaffolding
  • bridges
  • trestles
  • tunnels
  • shelters
  • towers

Maintenance includes repairing and remodeling structures of all kinds.

Admission Requirements:

  • A minimum of 50% in:
  • English 10-2
  • Math 10-3
  • or a pass mark in all five Canadian General Educational Development (GED) or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) tests.

All applicants, regardless of citizenship of country of origin, must meet our English Language Proficiency requirement. Out-of-province applicants or those not meeting the admission and/or program requirements should refer to the Admissions section of the website.

The pre-employment program consists of 360 hours of in-class and laboratory instruction, followed by a 120-hour unpaid practicum. To be eligible for the practicum the students must complete the in-class and laboratory portion of the program with a minimum cumulative average of 65%.

Program Requirements:

There are no program requirements for this program.

Graduation Requirements:

Students must maintain a cumulative grade of C+ (65%) (GPA - 2.30) in order qualify for a Certificate of Achievement 

Opportunities for Further Study:

Students with a minimum 65% standing in program requirements and 90% or better attendance record will be eligible to write the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training first year Carpenter exam. 

Certification:

SA 120 Safety Training includes a variety of short modules: Standard First Aid, CPR, Fall Protection, H2S Alive, Construction Safety Training System  and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Students successfully completing these modules will be awarded the applicable certification.
