ASL 303 - American Sign Language Level III Part C

Course Description:
In this course, students learn advanced nuances of storytelling in ASL. The material presented focuses on both formal and informal storytelling and sharing of events with more intricate detail of characters and number of characters or items within a story or event.

Rationale:
This is a required course for the American Sign Language & Deaf Culture Studies certificate program. Advanced ASL skills are required to fluently articulate oneself within the Deaf Community. Sharing stories and events that have occurred is also an integral part of Deaf Culture; therefore, students are exposed to more advanced ASL stories and learn how to articulately express themselves when telling stories in ASL.

Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. articulate themselves using more advanced expressive ASL discourse, ASL structure, and vocabulary.
  2. express ASL story-telling skills more fluently and formally about interesting facts, rules, and accidents.
  3. incorporate more story-telling role-shift variations and characters.
  4. present formally and informally in ASL.
  5. demonstrate comprehension of ASL stories.

Optional Resource Materials:
Links to any additional course readings or video clips are provided during class or via email. It is expected that students take notes during class and check their email regularly to stay abreast of changes and additions to course requirements and schedules.

Conduct of Course:
This 45-hour hands-on learning course is instructed in ASL and incorporates lectures, use of DVD or online clips, assigned readings, interactive activities, group and individual practice, discussions in ASL, reviews, and potential classes with invited guests.

In addition to classroom and instruction time, a minimum of 6-10 hours per week is required to successfully complete assignments, practice, and prepare for classes.

ASL tutoring services are available at no charge to students with documented learning disabilities. All students who wish to improve their working command of English or course content may participate, at no charge, in peer assisted study sessions - PASS; ASL tutoring services are available at the student’s expense. Finally, there are a number of student success resources including one-on-one coaching and support available online at no charge. For more information on participating in the above-mentioned programs or resources, please contact Lakeland’s Accessibility Coordinator.

It is expected that all students adhere to the guidelines set forth in the he Lakeland College Student Policies & Procedures.

This is an immersion course, which means that students are expected to use only the language of the classroom, ASL.

Regular attendance is essential for success in any course. Absence for any reason does not relieve a student of the responsibility of completing course work and assignments to the satisfaction of the instructor. Should an emergent situation arise that prevents a student from attending class, submitting an assignment on time, or completing a progress check or presentation, the student is required to notify the course instructor or the program facilitator within 24 hours of the absence.

In cases of ongoing absences due to illness, the student will be requested to submit a medical certificate/documentation.

In the event of an absence, it is recommended that students follow up with a peer first, and then consult the course instructor for any additional clarification or questions regarding material covered.

Absence from presentations or progress checks without a medical certificate/documentation is awarded a zero.

Students arriving after class commences are considered absent. More than two (2) absences per course may result in probation. Further absences may result in suspension from the program.

Instructors have the authority to require attendance in classes.

Community Events

Students are recommended to attend Deaf community events. The purpose is to observe, to socialize, be familiar with various signing styles and to practice signing skills. Some events may require admission fees, which vary from $10 to $40.00.

Any changes to assignment due dates are communicated in class and/or via email. Unless otherwise notified by your course instructor, all assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date noted on the course schedule. The course schedule, assignment and presentation details, and grading rubrics are provided in a separate document.

Late Assignments

Late assignments are not accepted; alternate presentation dates are not granted; and no supplementary assignments or presentation opportunities are given to compensate for poorly executed assignments/presentations.

Course Pass Requirements:
A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required to pass this course. Students must maintain a cumulative grade of B (GPA - Grade Point Average of 3.00) in order to qualify to graduate.
