Course Description:
Students continue to apply the techniques of production and management of a livestock enterprise by completing the activities introduced in AN 365 Student Managed Farm - Livestock I. Students participate in the management of the Lakeland College Student Managed Livestock Units. This applies to all aspects of operating the business including production, finances, and marketing.

Rationale:
This is an optional course for students in the Animal Science Technology program. This course provides a format to bring knowledge and experience together from previous courses and apply new skills in managing an operating unit.

Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

integrate and apply knowledge and skills learned in other courses.
work in a business group making management recommendations for a livestock unit.
assess production practices in livestock units.
analyze and update production records to establish key performance indicators.
apply beneficial and sustainable management practices in managing livestock.
choose marketing strategies for various livestock enterprises.
apply financial management skills in a production unit.
actively engage and network with industry.

Standard Operating Procedures which is updated annually and is posted on D2L each year.

Conduct of Course:
Students participate in the operations and management of the Lakeland College Student Managed Farm livestock units. Students continue working in livestock unit management teams established in AN365 during Semester One.

Attendance

Classroom and laboratory attendance is considered vital to the learning process and as significant to the students’ evaluation as examinations and reports.

Students having a combination of excused and/or unexcused absence of 20 percent or higher for the scheduled course hours will be required to withdraw and will automatically receive a “RW” (required withdrawal) for the course, regardless of any other evaluation results. (RW is a failing grade.).
An excused absence is one that is verified with your instructor. Verification should be prior to the absence or the next class day following the absence. Verification of the absence may take the form of a note from your doctor/College nurse regarding illness, or a note from another instructor regarding a field trip or other activity, or authorization by your instructor. An unexcused absence is anything NOT verified by the instructor prior to the absence or the next class day following the absence.

NOTE: Any exceptions to the above attendance policy (e.g. timetable conflicts, work-related issues) must be approved in writing by the Department Chair prior to the beginning of the course.

It is the students’ responsibility to know their own absentee record.

Normal hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with potential for evening courses, exams or extended field trips. Students are expected to be available for classes during these times.

Professionalism and ethics.
Types of leadership.
Maintaining SMF-Livestock unit production and financial records.
Developing production, operational, and financial goals for livestock units.
Preparation and presentation of budgets.
Livestock unit operations and economics.
Livestock marketing in an SMF-Livestock unit.
Preparing and presenting production, marketing, and financial reports.

Course Assessments:

Official final grades will be available on My Lakeland. Grades posted in D2L should be considered interim grades.
