Course Description: This course follows the latest Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee (SOPEEC) syllabus and curriculum to prepare a student to take the “A” portion of the 4th Class power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency examination. This course covers the following subject material: Legislation and regulations, plant and fire safety, plant operations and their impact upon the environment.
EN 152 covers in-depth the following subjects: Introduction to power engineering and its governance in Canada, Introduction to plant and fire safety and introduction to plant operations and the environment.
Rationale: This is a required course for the Process and Power Engineering Diploma (PPE) program. It prepares the students with the specific skills and abilities required to challenge the Provincial 4th Class Power Engineering examination as set out by SOPEEC.
Prerequisites: 50% Math 30-1 or 60% Math 30-2; 50% Chemistry 30 (recommended) or 65% Chemistry 20 Corequisites: EN 115 , EN 116 , EN 138 , EN 150 , EN 151
Course Learning Outcomes: A student who successfully completes the course will have reliably demonstrated the ability to
1.Describe the Power Engineer profession.
2.Describe the application of Jurisdictional Acts and Regulations with respect to boilers and pressure vessels.
3.Describe the purpose of boiler and pressure vessel Codes and Standards.
4.Describe general plant safety as it is related to Power Engineers.
5.Describe common safety programs generally applied in plants.
6.Describe the policies and procedures for safe storage and handling of dangerous materials.
7.Explain fire safety in an industrial plant.
8.Describe typical fire extinguishing equipment and its operation in plant environments.
9.Identify environmental considerations and how they relate to an operating plant.
10.Explain how gas and noise emissions affect plant operations.
11.Explain how liquid and solid emissions affect plant operation.

Conduct of Course: The course is delivered by classroom instruction using the material from the latest PanGlobal training systems Ltd. The course covers the topics outlined in the latest SOPEEC syllabus which is in line with Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA). Additional reference materials are used to supplement the core material.
The course is 30 hours in length and consists of lectures, quizzes, unit tests, and a final exam. The quizzes are comprised of multiple-choice questions from the textbooks, workbook or lectures or a combination of these.
