Course Description: This course follows the latest Standardization of Power Engineer Examination Committee (SOPEEC) syllabus and curriculum to prepare a student to take the “A” portion of the 4th Class power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency examination. This course covers the following subject material: Material science, welding processes, piping systems, valves, plant communication systems and sketching.
EN 151 covers in-depth the following subjects: Elements of materials science and welding technology, introductory fluid handling technology and fundamental industrial communication skills.
Rationale: This is a required course for the Process and Power Engineering Diploma (PPE) programs. It prepares the students with the specific skills and abilities required to challenge the Provincial 4th Class Power Engineering examination as set out by SOPEEC.
Prerequisites: 50% Math 30-1 or 60% Math 30-2; 50% Chemistry 30 (recommended) or 65% Chemistry 20 Corequisites: EN 115 , EN 116 , EN 138 , EN 150 , EN 152
Course Learning Outcomes: A student who successfully completes the course will have reliably demonstrated the ability to
1.Describe the mechanical properties of engineering materials used in engineering.
2.Describe welding processes relevant to the plant and Power Engineering.
3.Describe inspection processes and testing methods for welds and materials.
4.Discuss the basic types of piping, piping connections, supports and drainage devices used in industry.
5.Discuss the design and uses of the valve designs most commonly used in industry and on boilers.
6.Create engineering equipment sketches.
7.Identify common types of diagrams used in plants.
8.Describe the types and proper usage of plant communication systems.
9.Discuss the basic theory of combustion and the equipment used to provide proper combustion conditions within a boiler.
10.Describe common fuel systems found in boiler systems.
11.Describe basic concepts and equipment used to supply combustion air to boiler furnaces.
12.Describe feedwater systems used with boilers.
13.Describe the equipment, operation, and purpose of boiler blowoff and blowdown systems.
14.Describe the types of boiler fireside cleaning equipment, their purpose, and their operation.

Conduct of Course: The course is delivered by classroom instruction using the material from the latest Pan Global training systems Ltd. The course covers the topics outlined in the latest SOPEEC syllabus which is in line with Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA). Additional reference materials are used to supplement the core material.
The course is 20 hours in length and consists of lectures, quizzes, unit tests, and a final exam. The quizzes are comprised of multiple-choice questions from the textbooks, workbook or lectures or a combination of these.
