ED 110 - ECE Field Placement II 5 Credits Outline Effective Date 2024 Fall 19 (2024-2025)
Practicum Hours: 200 Course Description: This course is an advanced practicum with emphasis on programming based on observation of children’s needs and interests. Students incorporate Early Childhood Education philosophy in a workplace experience. P/F.
Rationale: This is a required course for Early Childhood Education Certificate students. This work integrated learning experience provides students with on-the-job opportunity to observe, interact, and assist children and teachers. Students apply knowledge gained in the Early Childhood Education Program. Students work with children in settings such as child development centres, kindergartens, primary schools, playschools, and other early learning environments.
Prerequisites: ED 109 Corequisites: Students must have completed or be in the process of successfully completing 8 courses with an overall GPA of 2.0 or greater.

Optional Resource Materials: Note: Students should be prepared to utilize all materials that they have used and created throughout the program.
Conduct of Course: Students’ complete practicum seminar prior to their practicum placement. The successful completion of the seminar is preparation for practicum
Students work with children in a setting for 4 full weeks. Students are placed in areas in where they have living accommodations.
Regular attendance is essential for success in any course. Absence for any reason does not relieve a student of the responsibility of completing course work and assignments to the satisfaction of the Practicum Supervisor and Assigned Instructor. Students may be required to make up missed practicum hours. In cases of repeated absences due to illness, the student may be requested to submit a medical certificate. Poor attendance may result in the suspension of a student from the course.
Students are required to inform their Assigned Instructor and Practicum Supervisor of any missed time prior to the start of their workday.

Course Requirements
Students please note:
You are to be actively involved in the early learning setting in which you are placed.
Your course requirements are to be completed after centre hours. You are not to complete your requirements within your working day.
All course requirements must be complete to receive a “Pass” in the course.
The course requirements include the following:
- Record of daily attendance.
- Assignments submitted directly to your Assigned Instructor:
- If in an early learning setting, observe, plan, implement, and reflect on experiences.
OR
- If in a school setting, make observations and document teacher-led activities to reflect on. If possible, students may be permitted to implement experiences through consultation with the classroom teacher as part of the student expectation discussion on the first day.
- Total Hours, Description of first day, Expectations and Goals, Observation of math and language, Midterm Self Evaluation, Guiding Behaviour and Week Four Goals and Expectations. Students are required to complete all assignments in their practicum booklets.
PLEASE NOTE:
Professionalism and confidentiality are always expected.
Course Assessments: Students are evaluated through direct observation by their Practicum Supervisors. Students’ complete discussions and assignments in their booklets submitted to and evaluated by their Assigned Instructor.
Mid-Term Evaluation
This evaluation is designed to give students and placements an opportunity to discuss performance and suggestions for improvement. If a student is having serious difficulties by this time, he/she may be requested to withdraw from the practicum.
Final Mark
A Pass/Fail grade is awarded upon completion of the practicum.
