RC 329 - SET Practicum 3 Credits Outline Effective Date 2023 Fall 2024/2025
Practicum Hours: 120 Course Description: This work integrated learning course, for all students in the Sustainable Energy Technology Diploma and Sustainable Energy Technician Certificate programs, provides a minimum 120hrs work experience in which students prepare themselves for career by applying theory-based concepts and lab experience in a workplace environment. P/F.
Rationale: This is an optional course for the Sustainable Energy Technology Diploma and Sustainable Energy Technician Certificate programs. It allows students to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills in industry situations, while working closely with a supervisor/mentor.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of 9 program courses in the Sustainable Energy Technology Diploma or Sustainable Energy Technician Certificate programs with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Corequisites: None
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- apply course learning to daily work activities.

- explore career opportunities.
- describe various processes and work activities within the field.
- developed an understanding of industry culture.
- demonstrates learning and growth from the experience.

Conduct of Course:
- Students find and secure work experience with a suitable host organization.
- Students must complete a minimum 120hrs with the host organization.
- Students work on a mutually agreeable schedule with host organization.
- Students adhere to dress code and safety protocol of the chosen host organization.
- Students and host organization are required to arrange between themselves all terms of the student’s work experience including compensation, if any, days of work, insurance, WCB, etc.
- Students must submit a reflection report upon completion of the work placement.
Students must participate in a minimum 120hrs of work with the host organization. Host organization must confirm the 120hrs have been met.
Content of Course:
- Field placement of 120hrs work experience training, networking, and completed assigned responsibilities directed by the host organization.
- Log reports to be sent to and reviewed by WIL coordinator upon completion of 40hrs, 80hrs, and 120hrs.
- Reflection report submitted to WIL coordinator at end of placement.
Course Assessments: The assigned grade for this course is either a Pass “P” or Fail “F”.
To receive a pass grade, students must satisfactorily complete all 120 hrs and the assigned responsibilities of the host organization as communicated by the host supervisor. The Course Learning Outcomes 1-6 have been completed as evaluated by the WIL Coordinator in consultation with the supervising individual at the host organization. In addition, the student must complete the log reports and career plan for the course.
Course Pass Requirements: This course is graded as Pass/Fail. No marks are assigned.
