Course Description: This course is designed to develop interpersonal and intercultural awareness, attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Students explore their own worldviews and assumptions with the goal of reducing bias, fostering awareness and inclusivity, and promoting advocacy. The course offers students an opportunity to examine different ways of knowing, communicating, and navigating conflicts while building interpersonal and intercultural relationship skills.
Rationale: This is a required course for the Animal Assisted Wellness Certificate students, the Early Childhood Education, and Child and Youth Care Counsellor Diploma students.
Professionals in Human Services fields work with diverse groups of individuals. Developing interpersonal competence and an awareness of intercultural diversity is essential for the creation of positive, effective relationships. By examining differences in communication, values, and experiences through a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion, students will be prepared with both the cultural sensitivity and interpersonal relationship skills necessary to be successful in their careers.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
- Identify and discuss the concepts, theories, and principles of interpersonal competencies.
- Express communication through a cross cultural lens.
- Develop self-awareness of one’s cultural worldviews, biases, assumptions, and communication styles.
- Apply principles of communication and relational practice that respect diversity of life space, culture, ethnicity, and values.
- Identify and analyze the barriers to effective verbal, non-verbal and listening practices.
- Facilitate difficult interpersonal conflicts through appropriate use of conflict resolution strategies.
- Advocate for anti-oppressive, anti-biased, and anti-racist practices in diverse cultural contexts.
- Discuss the challenges in interpersonal relationships through analysis of power, cultural, personal and gender issues.

Conduct of Course: Lectures, videos, class discussion, guest presentations, and role-playing are used to deliver the course content. Group participation is necessary.
Regular attendance is essential for success in any course. Absence for any reason does not relieve a student of the responsibility of completing course work and assignments to the satisfaction of the instructor. Frequent absences may result in the student being placed on probation. Further absences may result in suspension from the program.
In cases of repeated absences due to illness, the student may be requested to submit a medical certificate.
Instructors have the authority to require attendance in classes.

Course Pass Requirements: A minimum grade of D (50%) (1.00) is required to pass this course.
Students must maintain a cumulative grade of C (GPA - Grade Point Average of 2.00) in order to qualify to graduate.
