HS 116 - Intersections of Wellness 3 Credits Outline Effective Date 2024 Fall 2024/2025
Lecture Hours: 45 Course Description: This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the 8 dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, environmental, financial, and occupational. Students will explore each domain individually and analyze their interconnectedness. The course emphasizes the importance of integrating wellness strategies into personalized and community-based plans, considering diverse needs and cultural perspectives. Students will apply their knowledge through practical assignments and group discussions, fostering a holistic understanding of wellness.
Rationale: This course is an introductory course for students in the first year of the Community Practitioner Program. Students are introduced to the various concepts that need to be considered in planning for wellness for individuals with diverse needs. Students develop a foundation of knowledge to support them to participate in future courses and practicum experiences.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
- Define wellness and identify the 8 dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, environmental, financial, and occupational.
- Analyze common barriers to achieving wellness and understand its relevance for effective community support.
- Discuss cultural and personal perspectives on wellness and the interconnectedness of well-being across dimensions.
- Explore and understand factors contributing to wellness, analyzing strategies to support it.
- Apply inclusive strategies to support wellness and analyze person-centered practices in planning.
- Examine the interconnectedness and balance in Indigenous perspectives on health promotion and prevention.
- Develop individualized wellness plans that integrate strategies across multiple dimensions, taking into account unique needs and goals.
- Evaluate the role of social networks, community resources and recreation in promoting wellness across domains.

Optional Resource Materials: Digital and print resources will be provided and assigned throughout the course.
Conduct of Course: Lecture, guest speakers, class discussions, group exercises, and videos are used to deliver the course content. Content is available on the learning management system. Active learning is encouraged, and participation is necessary.
