Course Description: This course is 80 hours of work experience upon the completion of initial classroom studies. The student is assigned to a training position within the automotive repair industry. This practicum provides the student with an opportunity to observe and contribute to the day-to-day operations of an automotive service technician under normal operating conditions. The primary objective is to obtain the basic skills to function safely in the workplace and complete assigned tasks. P/F.
Rationale: This is a required course for students in the Pre-Employment Automotive Service Technician program. This course is designed to allow the student to transfer the skills developed in the classroom/lab setting into an actual work site. The practical work skills developed are essential to finding permanent employment.
Prerequisites: The pre-requisite for the practicum is a minimum of 65% cumulative average of Lakeland College Automotive Service Technician courses: AS 101 , AS 102 , AS 103 , AS 104 , AS 105 and SA 120 required certificates. Corequisites: None
Course Learning Outcomes: A student who successfully completes the course will have reliably demonstrated the ability to
- Perform on the job tasks utilizing learned safety skills.
- Perform on the job tasks involving all or part of brake systems, steering and suspension systems, electrical systems and basic maintenance.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate, listen and ask pertinent questions.
- Demonstrate appropriate work ethics and attitude.
- Demonstrate the ability to act as a team member.
Required Resource Materials: Textbook materials are not required.
For reasons of safety, the student requires all personal protective equipment as needed by industry such as:
- CSA approved steel toed boots
- safety glasses or googles
- clean, untorn coveralls

Conduct of Course: This course consists of 80 hours of time in the automotive service shop. Lakeland College instructional staff will assign suitable training facilities for each student under the direction of the location supervisor and/or journeyman, the student participates in the operation of the job site. The student is expected to serve in much the same fashion as would be required of an entry level employee. There is no remuneration for the work experience gained through this course. Transportation to the work site is the responsibility of the student. The student is covered by Worker’s Compensation and the Lakeland College General and Umbrella Liability Insurance policies.
Attendance is absolutely essential to achieve the field experience and interpersonal skill development intended in this course. Punctual, uninterrupted daily attendance is a job expectation. Exceptions are at the discretion of the field supervisor, and ultimately Lakeland College. A 90% attendance in the program is required to pass this course.
Content of Course: The student is given duties as assigned by a supervisor of the workplace for this practicum. Course Assessments: Successful completion is on a Pass/Fail basis determined jointly by Lakeland College and the industry supervisor.
A work experience form is completed by the industry supervisor. Using a grading key:
(1. Needs Practice, 2. Average, 3. Proficient, 4. Not applicable to this shop), the industry supervisor grades the student in the performance of the following Skills and Knowledge:
- Safety - Applies accident prevention principles and practices to promote injury-free work performance.
- Quality control - Complies with company control standards.
- Use and care of tools - Demonstrates ability to use hand, shop and power tools correctly.
- Communication Skills - Shows ability to communicate with co-workers, to listen to supervisor(s), and to ask questions when in doubt. Shows the ability to work as a team member.
- General Attitude - Demonstrates appropriate work ethics, attitude and self-motivation. Demonstrates stamina and desire to perform in a work situation. Maintains a standard of dress and grooming acceptable to the work situation and company.
Monitoring of work experience in the Pre-employment program is completed by the respective instructor. During the work experience each student is visited at a minimum of one time on-site and each student and industry supervisor are also contacted by phone. More on-site monitoring is provided if necessary to address concerns raised by the student or the industry supervisor.
- Official final grades will be available on My Lakeland. Grades posted in D2L should be considered interim grades.

Course Pass Requirements: This course is graded as a Pass “P” or Fail “F”.
