Lecture Hours: 45 Lab Hours: 45 Course Description: The study of basic molecular structure and reactivity of organic compounds based on their functional groups. Introduction to nomenclature, three-dimensional structure, physical properties, and reactivity of compounds of carbon. Functional groups covered will emphasize alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, and some aromatics. Examples will include hydrocarbons (petroleum products), halogenated organic compounds (e.g., pesticides), and polymers of industrial importance which may be found in everyday life.
